Question

A group of researchers is interested in examining whether physical activity affects risk of diabetes. The researchers go to local athletic events to recruit participants for their new study. They invite the athletes to participate, and also ask the athletes to invite their sedentary friends or family members to participate in the study. People who already have diabetes are excluded from the study. Participants are then contacted once a year for five years and asked whether they were diagnosed with diabetes in the past year.

The researchers successfully recruit 250 physically active athletes to participate in their study, of whom 22 report a diagnosis of diabetes within the study follow-up period. Among the 625 sedentary non-athletes, 70 report a diabetes diagnosis during the study follow-up period.

Calculate a relative risk to compare the incidence of disease in the two exposure groups. Show your calculations and interpret your relative risk in a sentence – what does this value tell you?

Explanation / Answer

Please see the table and answer below: -

Relative risk=22/250/70/625=0.7857

Hence, we can conclude that risk of diabetes amongst atheletes is 0.78 of the risk of diabetes amongst non-athletes.

Athletes Non-athletes Total Diabetes 22 70 92 No diabetes 228 555 783 Total 250 625 875
