Stats 270 Data Analysis Project Part 1-Getting the Data Obtain a data set of quantitative variables describing an item of interest to you. A good size data set to work with should contain at least 50 observations. The data set should contain one quantitative variable. Some suggestions are: Housing prices-choose a specific neighbourhood or area . Vehicle prices or mileage- choose a specific class of car (e.g. mid-size, luxury, minivan, etc) Annual incomes of accountants or instructors.. choose incomes from the same profession .Birth rates and death rates - try to localize this so the numbers aren't too huge Prices for various food items- steak prices and milk prices at a variety of stores or cities . Calories in a can of soup or sodium in the soup, or any food item of your choice · Sports statistics Some helpful sites you might try are: http://www.statcan.g.caf http:/inance yahoo.com http://www.calgary.ca/portal/server.pt (city business, economic profile and statistics) http://www.mis.ca http://www.autotrader.com Enter the data set into Excel. Include a heading at the top of the data set that accurately describes the data and includes units There are several data sets in Aplia as well. If you prefer, you may choose data from one of these sets Remember you only need 1 variable, some sets have multiple variables. Please save the list you want to use to a new spreadsheet. Regardless of where you obtain your data, you must provide the link or data set reference so that I can verify it UPLOAD THE FRE TO BRIGHTSPACE UNDER THE ASSIGNMENTS TAS IN THE "GETTING THE DATA FOLDEx. 0 88 F3 FS F6 F7 FB F9

Explanation / Answer

This is an open ended assignment, wherein the instructor wants you to explore various data sources, and present any one such example of your choice. Hence, there is not one unique way to answer this. Your ingenuity and creativity is desired. While some hints have been provided, it is not necessary to stick to them. I shall provide a couple of possible ways you can answer this.

Recall that the same type of data can be analyzed in multiple dimensions. For ex, the unemplyment rate in the US can be analyzed (i) geographically in each state (ii) holistically over different time periods, such as year on year (iii) as per the various age groups of people who are unemployed, etc. The idea is, we have to decide on two things here - One is the type of data, for ex, here it shall be the data of unemployment in US. But another aspect we have to also think of is, in what dimension do we want to analyze that data. Hence, our answer shall reflect both these choices at the same time.

Example I

We can pick up data for Crime in the United States from

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2013/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013/tables/1tabledatadecoverviewpdf/table_1_crime_in_the_united_states_by_volume_and_rate_per_100000_inhabitants_1994-2013.xls

This data is given for a 20 year period. The same data can also be analyzed for evert state from here

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2013/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013/tables/table-8/table-8-state-cuts/table_8_offenses_known_to_law_enforcement_alabama_by_city_2013.xls

So multiple ways to analyse the same data

Example 2

The Historical Sales data for 45 Walmart stores located in different regions is available here

https://www.kaggle.com/c/walmart-recruiting-store-sales-forecasting/data

Here the file needs to be downloaded after creating a profile which does not take much time. The file I downloaded had 421571 rows of data of weekly sales for the 45 stores. Lots of data to crunch!!

Example 3

IMF economic data is also a good resource for data analysis.

http://data.imf.org/?sk=388DFA60-1D26-4ADE-B505-A05A558D9A42

The website asks you to choose the country and then has multiple data sets. For example, here is the data set I reached after choosing Albania's Balance of Payments

http://data.imf.org/regular.aspx?key=61468205

So again, multiple data sets are available

Example IV

Another good data source is the US Bureau of Labor Statistics

https://www.bls.gov/data/

Direct Data Finder links lead to the desired data set. For ex, the Concumer Price Index data can be reached here

https://beta.bls.gov/dataQuery/find?fq=survey:[ap]&s=popularity:D

So you may choose any one of these, or some other data set you can research upon.
