#2. The following back-to-backs (right) and tem-and-leaf plot gives the percentage of residents "65 and over" those 'aged 18 to 24" (left) for each of the fifty states aged 18 to 24 65 and over 17 0 16 15 34 14 03 478 3 13 0 0 0 0 11233345569 0 12 0000 1 13 3 3 44789 21 11 2333479 8887766543 3222211000 10 6 4778 8 6 6 3 99999998877765522221 91,5 78 44 of- 7 (a) For what proportion of states is the percentage of residents 65 and over less than 10%? What is the median percentage of residents aged 18 to 24? (c) For the distribution of percentages of residents 65 and over what is the third quartile?

Explanation / Answer

a)Ans: 0.10 or 10 %

The number of states having less than 10% residents 65 and over is 5 (with values 6.3, 8.6, 9.5, 9.7, 9.8).

Therefore the proportion = 5/50 =0.1

Therefore in 10% of there are less than 10% residents 65 and over age.

b) Ans: 10.0

The total number of states is 50,

50/2= 25

therefore median is average of 25th and 26th values.

So median = (10.0+10.0)/2 = 10.0%

c) Ans: 13.4

50/4*3 = 37.5

Therefore third quartile is 38th value in the plot. That is 13.4.
