Question

Explain why more fluid is lost from the capillaries than is reabsorbed as blood flows through the capillary beds. Detail the pressures involved. While walking along the street, you and your friend see an elderly woman whose left arm is swollen to several times its normal size. Your friend remarks that the woman must have been in the tropics and contracted a pathogen that produces elephantiasis. You disagree and argue that it's more likely that the woman had a radical mastectomy. Explain the rationale behind your answer Paula's grandfather is diagnosed with lung cancer. His physician takes biopsies of several lymph nodes from neighboring regions of the body, and Paula wonders why, since his cancer is in the lungs. What would you tell her? Doris has an obstruction of her right primary bronchus. As a result, how would you expect the oxygen-hemoglobin saturation curve for her right lung to compare with that for her left? . .

Explanation / Answer

Capillaries are the end blood vessels where the fluid exchange occurs in the body. However the fluid in the arterial end is higher than venous end.So when the fluid enters the capillaries depending upon the amount of metabolic rate,if higher the pressure is high,if low the pressure is low. Thus is termed as hydrostatic pressure of capillaries. Diffusion and transcytosis is capillary exchange.Fluid moving in is absorption and moving out is capillary filteration. Encephalitis is a disease where swelling occurs but mostly it starts at lowerlimb. This makes mobilisation difficult, but in this case it an elderly lady whose one arm is swollen to abnormal sign. This is one typical sign that she could have undergone a mastectomy which lead to disruption in lymph node function and thus edema or swelling resulted. This helps to know the stage of the cancer, because there are high chances that it spreads. So determining which lymph nodes are affected plays a vital role in treatment. Hemoglobin binds to oxygen. When there is an instruction in the right bronchus the oxyhemoglobun curve shifts to right side.
