Question

Um I has 7 red and 4 blue balls while Urn II has 5 red and 6 blue balls. An urn is selected at random and a ball is drawn from it. Determine the probability that (a) the ball is blue if Um lis selected, (b) the ball was blue and Urn II was selected, (c) the ball was blue Suppose in the previous exercise the ums are seleeted according to the toss of a fair die. If 1 or re selected according to the toss of a fair die. If1 or 3 is obtained, Um I is selected, otherwise Um Il is selected. Redo the previous exercise under these assumptions. ANS-(A) (b) (c)

Explanation / Answer

8. Please post 1 question per post. Here' answer to 8, solved using steps. Explanations also included.

a.P( blue ball when Urn 1 is selected) = 4/11 ( as there are 4 blue and 7 red balls in Urn1)

b.P( blue ball when Urn 2 is selected) = 1/2 *6/11 = 3/11 ( as there are 6 blue and 5 red balls in Urn2 and probability to select URn 2 is 1/2 )

c.P( ball is blue) = (1/2)*(4/11) + (1/2)*(6/11) = 2/11 + 3/11 = 5/11.
1/2 is the probability of selecting any of the 2 urns
