Question
How is the hatching of water python eggs influenced by the temperature of the snake’s nest? Researchers assigned newly laid eggs to one of two temperatures: hot or cold. Hot duplicates the extra warmth provided by the mother python, and cold duplicates the absence of the mother. 80% (32 out of 40) hot eggs hatched. 55% (33 out of 60) cold eggs hatched. Does temperature affect whether an egg hatches or not? Do a z-test to answer this question. Calculate the z-statistic, state the critical value, state whether you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis, and state what this means with regards to temperature affecting whether or not an egg hatches.
Explanation / Answer
Hypothesis:
Null hypothesis: p1 = p2
alternative hypothesis: p1 not equal to p2
Critical value for 0.05 = +/- 1.96
Test statistic:
p1= 0.8 , p2 = 0.55 , n1 = 40 , n2 =33
z = ( p1 - p2) / sqrt(p1 * (1-p1)/n1 + p2 * ( 1 -p2)/n2)
= ( 0.8 - 0.55) / sqrt((0.8 * 0.2) / 40 + (0.55 * 0.450/33)
= 2.3313
As z value is greater than critical value so , we reject the null hypothesis.
