Southwest Airlines is able to keep fares low, in part because of relatively low maintenance costs on its airplanes. One of the main reasons for the low maintenance costs is that Southwest flies only one type of aircraft, the Boeing 737. However, Southwest flies three different versions of the 737. Suppose Southwest decides to conduct a study to determine whether there is a significant difference in the average annual maintenance costs for the three types of 737s used. (2). A large multinational banking company wants to determine whether there is a significant difference in the average dollar amounts purchased by users of different types of credit cards. Among the credit cards being studied are MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express. 1.

a ) The measurable dependent variable for such a study is the fares charged by Southwest Airlines , as the fares are dependent on the maintenance cost of the airlines. Low maintenance cost means low fares and high maintenance cost means high fares . Thus fare charged by the Southwest Airlines is the dependent variable here.

b ) Here , the indepndent variable is the maintenance cost and a factor that might affect the maintenance cost is the different versions of the Boeing 737 that the airlines uses . Now , the airline uses three diferent versions of the Boeing 737 . So here there are three levels of the factor that affect the independent variable which is the maintenance cost . This are the three different versions of the Boeing 737 that the airline uses .
