Question
Two brands of cell phone batteries were compared to see which battery held a longer charge (in hours). The data from six randomly selected batteries from each brand is listed below:
Brand A: 26.2, 27.6, 24.1, 25.2, 27.3, 25.6
Brand B: 18.6, 24.7, 33.4, 25.4, 26.3, 27.1
Using technology, find the mean and standard deviation for each brand (round your answers to one decimal place):
Brand A: mean = standard deviation =
Brand B: mean = standard deviation =
Based on consistency, which brand would be the better battery to choose and why?
Brand A because it has the smaller standard deviation.Brand B because it has the larger range. Brand B because it has the largest value.Brand A because it has the larger mean.
Explanation / Answer
For Brand A: Mean= 26, Standard Deviation = 1.319
For Brand B: Mean = 25.9167, Standard Deviation = 4.75
Since we are choosing a battery based on consistence, i.e battery life is lesser volatile for the sample, we will look at the standard deviation. Therefore we choose Brand A, because it has the smaller standard deviation.
