Question
Identify the type of investigation used (i.e., non-experimental, experimental, or quasi- experimental) • If the investigation has an independent variable, dependent variable, and/or extraneous variable, identify each. 3. A researcher tested the effect of caffeine on sleep. Forty pilots volunteered to participate in the study and signed up for one of two nights. Pilots on Tuesday night drank a cup of regular coffee and those on Wednesday night received a cup of decaffeinated coffee. They then took a nap and length of time to fall asleep was recorded with the aid of an EEG. Pilots in the caffeine group took significantly longer to fall asleep. The researcher concludes that caffeine interferes with the ability to fall asleep. a. Type of investigation? b. Variables?
Explanation / Answer
For this research, I would define it as a quasi-experimental. The fact is that the volunteerpilots can be of different age groups, and the variables can vary due to the amount of caffeine intake each age group takes on a day-to-day basis. Caffeine can behave differently due to age. Other factors can affect the results as well, such as the length of time each pilots are awake before beginning the experiment. The conclusion of this research cannot be substantiated because the length of time each individual takes to fallasleep can vary by many other factors, and not just the cup of coffee they drink prior to napping.
Independent variable in this case is are the factors of how much caffeine each pilot has within their body prior to the study. Another independent variable is the age group and sex of the pilots. The affects of caffeine can vary by sex and age group.
The dependent variable in this case, is based on the amount of caffeine each pilot can tolerate within their system. Some participants may drink more caffeine on a daily basis while others may not have caffeine. The individuals tolerance to caffeine can be easily become a offset variable within this research study
