Question
6.16. Hurricanes The World Metcorological Organization gives hurricanes human names (such as Hurricane Katrina that hit the southern U.S. in 2005 eventually killing 1833 people). There is a belief that hurricanes given female names may be more deadly than male names because people do not prepare as seriously for a female-named hurricane. [103 The table below summarizes the number of deaths. Gender n Minimum Q1 Median Q3 Maximum Mean Std Dev Male 30 Female 64 15 81 14.23 21.16 1833 58.16 235.33 (a) Explain why the median is a better comparison measure than the mean in this situa- tion. (b) Why is the standard deviation for female-named hurricanes so much more than male named hurricanes? (c) Find the interquartile range for male-named hurricanes and female-named hurricanes. (d) There is some evidence that female-named hurricanes have resulted in more deaths. One issue that may play a role is that from 1950-1978 only female names were used. Since 1978 names are given on a rotating basis as male, female, male, fomale, . .. Explain why this might impact the result where year is a possible confounding variable.Explanation / Answer
A)
Median is considered as the best measure of the Central tendency when the data is skewed. However, mean is considered as the best measure of the Central tendency when data is normally distributed. in this scenario, my data is skewed and hence I can say that median is the preferred measure of Central tendency as compared to mean.
It is also expected that the data has a lot of outliers, and in this case mean is the preferred mode of Central tendency over mean.
B)
The female named huricances have more standard deviation as compared to that of males. This is the case because female named huricances is expected to have more outliers as compared to that of males. Hence the distribution for female named huricances is more skewed as compared to that of males. Thus the increasing standard deviation for females.
C)
IQR male named huricances = Q3-Q1= 15-1 =14
IQR female named huricances = = Q3-Q1= 22-2 = 20
D)
Co-founding variable is the one which influences my result as it affect the dependent and independent variable. It introduces biasness. hence it is important to observe or know this variable
In this scenario here is my co-founding variable. There may be a specific year with several and serious diseases due to which deaths occur in that particular year. they've maybe and your in which a natural calamity took place due to which many deaths occur. this affects my dependent variable that and I can say that year is a co-founding variable
