UPDATE: THIS IS ALL THE INFORMATION GIVEN ON THE QUESTION. THEY ALSO WANT WHAT TYPE OF BIAS. YES THIS IS FROM MY STATISTICS CLASS

102. Suppose a congresswoman wishes to survey her constituents concerning their opinions on whether the federal government should increase spending on welfare programs. Discuss possible sources of bias with regard to the following two options: (a) Sending out a mail-in survey using a registered voter list; (b) Broadcasting a radio appeal urging interested citizens in her district to call in their opinions to her office.

Explanation / Answer

The sources of bias are:

(a) Sending out a mail-in survey using a registered voter list.

Non-response bias: This happens when most of the people do not respond to the survey. If the response of few people who do respond is significantly different from what it would have been if everybody had responded, then we have a non-response bias.

(b) Broadcasting a radio appeal urging interested citizens in her district to call in their opinions to her office.

Undercoverage: Only those who listen to the radio regularly are likely to call. Those who follow other forms of media are likely to miss out on knowing about this survey.

Voluntary response bias: Only those who have strong opinion about the issue are likely to call. People who have opinion on this but are not feeling very strongly about it are more likely to keep their opinion to themselves.
