Question
Market researchers working for a large fitness company want to know if male and female patrons differ in terms of how many hours per week they spend at the gym. At their gym, customers have ID cards that they use to sign in and out of the gym, so the researchers are able to obtain data concerning how long each customer was in the gym. They obtain data from a random sample of 50 male patrons and 50 female patrons.
Would independent two sample test work better than the paired test here? Explain why.
Explanation / Answer
In this case, we have to do an independent 2 sample t test.
We do a paired t test when we have a treatment to be monitored before the treatment is administered and after the treatment is administered on the same persons on whom the without treatment condition was monitored. A paired t test cannot have have effects measured on 2 different sets of people.
