vizedhtmlcontent.next.ecollege.com Lab Activities https://vizedhtmic Statistics and Probability question | Chegg.com Lab 3.1-3.2 Understanding Measures of Center and Dispersion (Spread) In this lab, you wil describe the data through measures of central tendency in relation to the shape of the distribution Also, you will study the meaning of the dispersion. Directions Open the Math 227 Student Survey data. Create a dot plot of the students' weight (Graph>Dotplot> Select the desired column> check Mean and Median under markers: >Computel). Also, find the following summary statistics: Mean, Median, and standard deviation 1. Measures of Center a) What is the definition of measures of central tendency? b) Describe the shape of the distribution. c) Find the mean and the median weight Mean d) Which measure of central tendency better describes the students' weight and why? 2. Resistant to extreme values a) Find the maximum weight in the dotplot. b Suppose this maximum weight was actually 1000 lb. Replace the current maximum weight with 1000 in the column for student weight and find the new mean and the median. What happens to the value of the mean? What happens to the value of the median? New Mean: New Median: c) A numerical summary of data is said to be resistant fextreme values(very large or small) relative to the data do not affect its value substantially. Which value is resistant, the mean or the median? Explain your answer based on your observation in part 2b). d) In skewed-right distribution, which value is larger between the mean and median? In skewed-left distribution, which value is larger between the mean and the median? Why?Explanation / Answer
1 a)
an average or central tendency is a single figure that is computed from a given distribution to give a central idea about the entire serie
b)
The shape of the distribution is described by the following
number of peaks in the distribution
its symmetry(or skew)
c)
The data is not given but lets assume that the weights are 4,4,3,2,1
so mean = (4+4+3+2+1)/5= 14/5 = 2.8
and median is the middle value of the data when sorted in ascending or descending order which is
1,2,3,4,4 which is 3
d)
check the distribution of the data , if the distribution is skewed then median is the better measure , if the distribution is not skewed then mean would be a better measure
