Question

8. Children on the Beach 1 point possible (graded) You spend one day of your Italy trip at the beach "Ostia" close to Rome, where many families spend the day with their children. You notice that the Italian families seem to have a lot of children! You count the children of 10 Italian families and get a mean of 2.1 children. The number of children in Italian families is normally distributed with a standard deviation of 0.8 children. You know that a study from the early 1990's showed that Italian families had on average only 1.8 children (this is the status quo Test the claim that Italian families on average have more children than in the early 1990s using a level of significance a 0.1, za 1.28. O Accept the claim H1, reject HO Reject the claim H1, accept HO

Explanation / Answer

Below are the null and alternate hypothesis
H0: mu <= 1.8
Ha: mu > 1.8

Test statistic,
t = (2.1 - 1.8)/(0.8/sqrt(10))
z = 1.1859

As calculated value of test statistic is less than the critical value of 1.28 we fail to reject the null hypothesis

i.e. Reject the claim H1, accept H0
