Question

Question 5 [8]**MINITAB An engineer collected data to examine the effect of a new catalyst on the total cost of a process. The goal is to minimize cost. Historically the process has used 'Catalyst B' but the engineer was evaluating a new catalyst offered by the same vendor called Catalyst A'. She calculated the unit cost of production for 16 consecutive days (randomly assigning one of the catalysts each day resulting in 8 data points for both catalysts A and B). Use Minitab to answer this question-the data can be found in the data set Factopt on Avenue to Learn (available as Miniatb worksheet.mtw or Excel format xls). By calculating an appropriate 95% confidence interval, determine if there is a significant difference in cost between catalysts or if the observed difference is due instead to random chance. Be sure to justify your conclusion. (You can assume that the cost data from both machines is normally distributed, so that you don't need to create probability plots to test the assumption of normality). The two columns of data you will be using for this analysis are Catalyst (C7) and Cost (C9). You can assume the population variances are the same. Be sure to copy/paste your Minitab output into your assignment submission for this question.

Explanation / Answer

The minitab for the above question is as follows.

From the above minitab output, the 95% confidence interval for difference in the means of cost between catalyst A and catalyst B is (-6.33, -1.44). This interval does not contain the value of zero. So there is sufficient evidence at 5% level from the sample data that there is significant difference in the cost between the catalysts and the difference in the sample is not by random chance.
