Chapter 3: Problem Set 52 5. Estimating a Mean: Estimate the mean score from the frequency distribution below Score Frequency 60- 64 65- 69 70 74 75- 79 80- 84 Score Frequency 61 70 71 80 81 90 91 100 26.Estimating a Mean: Estimate the mean score from the 2 6 frequency distribution below. 47Shapes of distributions: Determine whether the following data, if put into a histogram would result in a S distribution that is normal, skewed, bimodal, or uniform. (a) (b) The shoe sizes of 200 randomly selected adults. The shoe sizes of 200 randomly selected adult men. (c) The shoe sizes of 200 andomly selected males (children included). (d) The last digit in the phone numbers of 1000 randomly selected people from across the country

Explanation / Answer

5.

Mean = fx / f = 1067/16 = 66.6875

6.

Mean = fx / f = 956/12 = 79.67
7.

(a)
The shoe size of 200 randomly selected adults -  Adults include both men and women. Since women on average tend to have smaller feet then men, we can expect the distirbution to be bimodal.

(b)
The shoe size of 200 randomly selected adult men- Since it's adult men we're talking about the shoe sizes won't differ significantly. So we can expect a normal distirbution.

(c)
The shoe sizes of 200 randomly selected males(children included): It depends on the number of children and adults in the sample. Correspondingly, the distribution could be left or right skewed.

(d)
The last digit in the phone numbers of 1000 randomly selected people from across the country - Since the last digit of a phone number is not country-specific and it could be anything between 0 and 9 , all digits equally likely, so it will most probably be uniform distribution.
