LABORATORY Integumentary System INTRODUCTION The integumentary system consists of the skin and asso- ciated structures, such as hair, nails, and several glands The integument consists primarily of a cutaneous mem- brane composed of a superficial epidermis and a deeper dermis. Below these two layers is an underlying layer, called the hypodermis, which anchors the integument to deeper structures. The skin is the largest organ of the body and is vital for temperature regulation and for protection against water loss and invasion from micro- organisms.
