Question
A 50,000kg locomotive pulls a train consisting of 100identical 10,000kg box cars. As the train begins to accelerate fromrest the tension in the coupling between last and second last carbox is 1500N. a) Calculate the force applied by the locomotive to the firstbox car. b) Calculate the applied force on the locomotive ( ie theforce of the rails on the locomotive's wheels) A 50,000kg locomotive pulls a train consisting of 100identical 10,000kg box cars. (a) If the tension between the last and the second last is 1500N. The acceleration will be.... T= ma 1500=10,000*a a=0.15 m/s2 The tension/force applied by the locomotive to the first box carwill be F=ma F=100(10,000)(0.15) =150,000 N. =1.5 E 5 N. (I'm not sure if it's right..) (b). while it's accelerating, the force applying on the locomotivewill be Net force = ma ma= (50,000+100*10,000)(0.15) =157,500 N =1.57 E 5 N. Does this help?
