Question

Cassidy is 3 times as old as Drew. In 8 years, Cassidy will only be twice as old as drew. How old is Cassidy right now? ( I have to write down what I know about Cassidy's age, now in terms of Drew. I also have to write down what I know about Cassidy's age, in 8 years, in terms of Drew. Then I have to write down the unknowns. Since Cassidy is always spoken of in terms of Drew, I have to  let Drew be the variable. Then I have to re-read the problem and translate it using the variable and the other known information. I am having problems trying to put all of this together. Please help Thanks

Explanation / Answer

Good start letting the unknown be Drew's age. Now, C = 3D. In 8 years, C+8 = 2(D+8). So by substitution, 3D + 8 = 2(D+8). Simplifying, 3D + 8 = 2D + 16, so D = 8. Thus C = 3*8 = 24. Checking, 24+8 = 2*(8+8). Check!
