Question
An account exec. traveled 45 miles by car and then an additional 1050 miles by plane! The rate of the plane was seven times the rate of the car. The total time for the trip was 3 and 1/4 hours, What was the rate of the plane?????Explanation / Answer
Note that distance is just equal to rate times the given time.(d=rt) Let x be the rate of the car rate(mi/hr) distance(miles) Car x 45 Plane 7x 1050 d = rt ------> t=d/t since the time traveled by both the car and the plane is 3.25hours. Then the working equation would then be (45/x) + (1050/7x) = 3.25 [(315+1050)/7x] = 3.25 1365 = 22.75x x = 60 miles per hours but we are asked what is the rate of the plane. Hence, 7x = 420miles per hour. Therefore the rate of the plane is 420 miles per hour.
