Question
Annual transactions on Mastercards debit cards that donot require a PIN code have grown from about $10billion in 1997 to $110 billion in 2002. QUESTIONS: A) Find the linear function given by T(x)=m(x-x1)+ y1 that models these data,where x is the year B)Use T(x) to estimate years when the annualtransactions were between $50 billion and $90 billion. Annual transactions on Mastercards debit cards that donot require a PIN code have grown from about $10billion in 1997 to $110 billion in 2002. QUESTIONS: A) Find the linear function given by T(x)=m(x-x1)+ y1 that models these data,where x is the year B)Use T(x) to estimate years when the annualtransactions were between $50 billion and $90 billion.Explanation / Answer
Here, x1= 1997 and y1= 10
At x= 2002, T(x) = 110 = m(2002-1997)+ 10 m= (110-10)/(2002-1997) = 100/5 =20
m = 20
So the linear equation for T(x) in billions
T(x)= 20*(x-1997)+10
B) T(x) = 50 = 20*(x-1997) +10
On solving x= (50-10)/20 + 1997 = 1999
Similarly
90 = 20*(x-1997)+10
x= (90-10)/20 + 1997 = 2001
So between years 1999 and 2001, the transaction were between$50billion and $90 billion.
