Explanation / Answer

A 400 mile race in 2:42:5 is pretty impressive, but we'll skipthat. You know the total distance traveled was 400 miles (or meters -whatever). When you say Edwards was 80 mi closer to the finish than the start, what that says is the following: Half of the distance is 200 mi. Therefore, at that point he'sequidistant between the start and finish. If he is 240 mi into the race, he is only 160 mi until the finishline. He is 240 mi from the starting point. 240 - 160is 80 mi. Therefore, we know that he had traveled 240 mi.
