Question
I've read the book and every online resource I can find. I can't find one answer dumbed down enough to understand this question or respond. Can someone please explain dumb this all the way down to crayon? Are we talking about an axis, comparison, group, multiplication sign? x(y) are two relative numbers... I don't understand. What values of x can be used in a function? If you wanted to graph a function, what values of x would you choose and why?
Thanks for your question. How do you know what values of X to use when you're trying to graph a function?
Explanation / Answer
Values of X mean you input a number into the function to find the result. A simple example: y=x+3 If you enter the value of 1 for x you get : y=(1)+3 All it means is you choose a value to use in place of x and everywhere you see x in your equation you place that value. If you are graphing an equation, you use 2 or more values for x to plot the line of the function. In the above example if you use x=1 you get y=4. If you use x=2 you get y=5. With that straight line function, 2 points are enough to plot the line. To plot the line, you place a point on an x/y graph at the location of (1,4) and another at (2,5) then draw a line between the 2 points. If you put any other values for x you will get resulting y values that lie on the line that you just drew. I hope this helps. Drew
