Question

" your friend goes to the mall and finds a vending machine selling "Colossal Gumballs" for one dollar. He purchases one and measures it to find out it is 8.00 cm in diameter. The gumball is essentially a hallow sphere. Obviously, it is too large to fit into his mouth, so he cuts it perfectly in half, keeps one half and hands the other half to you. The candy coating and the gum thickness (the gumball wall thickness) together measure 0.75 cm. What is the surface area of the piece you are holding?"

I had this question in my engineering test. the answer is 28.5 square inches. I need to know how to get to this answer.
thank you

Explanation / Answer

surface area of a sphere is 4r2 so half of that would be 2r2... now i dont think taht the candy thickness should matter unless the diameter found was only of the gum and not the candy coating. .... the question is slight vague... let me know if this helps
