Question
{(The time required for a certain chemical reaction is related to the amount of catalyst present during the reaction. The domain of the relation is the number of grams of catalyst, and the range is the number of seconds required for a fixed amount of the chemical to react. The following relation is the data from several reactions:[(2,180),(2.5,6),(2.7,0.05),(2.9,0.001),(3.0,6),(3.1,6)(3.1,15)(3.2,37),(3.3,176)}.Is the relation a function? If the domain and range were interchanged, would the relation be a function?Explain.
Explanation / Answer
The important thing to remeber about a function is that for every x value, there is only ONE y value. This means that if you look at your set of points, the x values shouldn't repeat (x is the first value in the parenthesis). If the x values do repeat, quick check if the y values are identical (y values are the second ones in the parenthesis). If the y values are different for the same x values. Example: (2,8)(3,5)(3,7)(5,8) is not a function because the second and third points have the same x value (in this case 3), but differnet y values (in this case 5 and 7). For the second part, simply flip which number is x and which is y [Note: domain means x values and range means y values, so the problem is really asking you to interchange the x and y values]. So, in this scenario, the example from before is also not a function because the number 8 appears twice as an x value (in the first and fourth points). If none of the x values repeated, then it would be a function. Good luck.
