Question

There are three parts to this discussion so make sure that you do them all. 1. Find a "slope" in your home or work place. An example would be a lamp shade or a flower pot. Give us the dimensions of the "rise" and "run" and then calculate the slope. Do NOT give two points for this one, just give the rise and the run. Explain how to find the slope from this. 2. Chose two points on the Cartesian coordinate plane. Use those two points to find the slope. Give the formula that you need to do this and then calculate the slope showing all steps. 3. Answer these questions. How can you use the slope to graph a line? What does the slope mean?

Explanation / Answer

1) The slope is of a water bottle that is placed 40 cms from my seat and has a height of 20 cms.
its slope will be = rise/ run = 20cm/40cm = 1/2
Slope is given by the formula = rise / run ; In this case, it is 20/40 = 1/2
Thus, the slope is 1/2

2) Let the two points be A (1,2) and B (-4,-10)
The slope is calculated by taking ratio of difference of y co-ordinates and x co-ordinates
M (slope) = (y2-y1) / (x2-x1) = (-10-2)/ (-4-1) = -12/ (-5) = 12/5
Thus, slope of the line joining these two points is 12/5

3) Slope can be easily used to graph a line. Slope represents that for each unit change in 'x', how much of 'y' changes;
So the rise/ run ratio is slope. Slope can also be expressed as tan 't' where 't' is the angle made by the line with the positive x-axis in counter-clockwise direction.
