Question
The world's oldest bride was 19 year older than her groom. Together, their ages totaled 185 yr. How old were the bride and the groom? Twice the sum of a number and eleven is twenty-two less than three times the number. Find the number. Three times a number is the same as the deference of twice the number and seven. Find the number. The left and right page numbers of an open book are two consecutive integers whose sum is 469. Find these page numbers. The room numbers of two adjacent classrooms are two consecutive even numbers. If their sum is 654, find the classroom numbers.Explanation / Answer
1) Let age of bride is x and age of groom is y,
Now, Bride is 19 years older than groom, (Which means sum of groom's age and 19 gives age of bride.)
y = x-19 or x = y+19
Sum of both's ages is 185, this implies x+y = 185,
Now, just solve both of the equation,
x-y = 19
x+y = 185,
By summing both equation x-y + x+y = 19 + 185 -----> 2x = 204 - - -> x = 102,
y = x-19 = 102 - 19 = 83.
Age of bride is 102 and age of groom is 83, you can check that sum of both is 185 and 102-19 = 83.
2)
Suppose that number is x,
Now, twicw the sum of number and 11 is 22 less than 3x.
This implies, 2x + 11 = 3x - 22,
11+22 = 3x - 2x - - - - > 33 = x,
Thus, x=33, let check it, twice number and 11 gives 2(33)+11 = 77 and 3x-22 = 3(33) - 22=99-22 =77,
3)
Here, first we need to clarify the definition of difference,
In mathematics, difference of set A and set B is B - A, So we follow this same for numbers as well.
Now, Three times number is same as difference of twice the number and 7.
Let that number is x,
then 3x = 7 - 2x, -----> 3x+2x = 7,------> 5x = 7 then x = 7/5 = 1.4
4)
The left and right page of open is two consecutive numbers,
Let left page number is x, then right page number is x+1 , which means consecutive only,
Now, sum of that page numbers is 469, this implies x + (x+1) = 469 - ---> x+x+1=469 ----> 2x = 469 - 1 = 468,
2x = 468 ----> x = 234.
Thus, page number of left page is 234 and page number of right page is 234+1 = 235.
5)
Number of two rooms is consecutive even number , let room number of that first room is x, then second room's number will be x+2 , becasue numbers are two consecutive even number,
And sum of those number is 654, this implies x +(x+2) = 654,
2x+2 = 654-----> 2x = 654-2 = 652 ----> 2x = 652 and then x= 652/2 = 326,
x = 326 and x+2 = 326+2 = 328,
Sum of those number 326 + 328 = 654.
