Question
A survey of 500 university students were polled as to their college and whether or not they supported the new law allowing handguns on campus resulted in the following. What proportion of business students support the new law? What proportion of liberal arts students support the new law? What proportion of engineering students support the new law? Based on the results for parts a, b, and c above, would you say that support for the new law is independent of the student's college (explain your answer)? If I randomly selected one student from one of these colleges, asked him/her if they supported the new law, and their response was "Yes." Given this information, what do you think the probability that this student is a business student? If I hid a bunch of students behind a closed door and told you that all these students supported the new law, what proportion of them would you expect to be female?Explanation / Answer
a) Proportion Of business students supports the law = 50/120 = 5/12
b) Proportion Of liberal arts students supports the law= 150/240 = 5/8
c) Proportion Of engineering students supports the law = 120/140 =6/7
d) No the proportion is dependent on college as engineering students highly support the law where its opposite in case of business students
e) Using bayes theorom probability of this being business student is = 5/12/(5/12+5/8+6/7) = 70/(70+105+144) =70/319
f) No data is given about gender of students so we cannot calcualte the proportion
