Question

I dont know where to begin with this problem? Can someone help me soving this problem by showing each step? I would really apprecite it!

A drunkard stands on the middle rung of a 3 rung ladder. From the middle rung she steps up with probability .6 and down with probability .4. From the top rung she steps down with probability .8 and falls with probability .2. From the bottom rung she steps up with probability .5 and down to safety with probability .5.

Define variables and write equations which, if solved, would tell you the probability that she falls. Define variables and write equations which, if solved, would tell you the expected number of steps that the she will take (until she falls or gets off the ladder safely).

Explanation / Answer

would tell you the probability that she falls

P(she falls) = 0.6*0.4 + 0.8*0.2 + 0.5*0.5

P( she falls) = 0.65

expected number of steps that she will take until she falls

expected number = 3 * 0.65 = 1.95

almost 2 steps
