Question

1- Suppose you flip a fair well balanced coin. List all possible outcomes. What are chances to get a head? Explain.

2- Suppose that you will flip a fair coin twice. List all possible outcomes. What is the chance to get two heads? What is the chance to get at least 1 head?

3- Find a quarter, flip it 20 times and record outcomes. Suppose now you will flip your coin one more time. How likely you will get a head? Suppose you had all 20 heads out of 20 flips. How likely you will get a head on your next flip?

Explanation / Answer

1.

When we flip a fair coin only two outcomes are possible : one is head (H) and one is tail (T). So sample space is

S = {H, T}

The chance of getting a head is 1/2.

2.

When we flip a coin twice following will be the sample space:

S = {HH, HT, TH, TT}

The chance of getting 2 heads is 1 /4

We can get at least 1 head in three outcomes HH, HT, TH so the chance of get at least 1 head is 3/4.
