Question
This graph was recently presented in a congressional hearing. Can you find anything suspicious? CNN posted this graph to their website. What is misleading about it? Misuses of statistics present can occur in many ways. Sometimes they are a simple mistake or oversight made by the person or organization presenting the information. Occasionally, these misuses are intentional and the intent it to misinform those reading or viewing it. Please discuss the graphs above with your group mates Can you find any more misuses in the media?Explanation / Answer
1. In the first graph the dual axis in y is not synchronised.
The actual increase in abortion is 327,000 - 289,750 = 37,250
The actual decrease in cancer screening and prevention services = 2,007,271 - 935,573 = 1,071,698
Although the increase in abortions is only 3.47% of the decrease in cancer screening and prevention services, the graph aims to show that the two quantities are comparable.
2.
In the second graph the zero axis is chosen unfairly.
In real, the actual difference between Democrats and Republicans who agree over the issue is not much,i.e, 62-54 = 8, But choosing the zero axis as 53 instead of 0, unfairly exaggarates the results in the favour of democrats over republicans and independents.
