Match the following research questions to the appropriate hypothesis tests: (One sample t-test, two independent samples t-test, or one sample z-test)
A researcher collected data on the incomes of recent B.A. graduates from Carleton, and wishes to compare these to incomes of all Ontario B.A. grads. However, the only information the researcher has about this population is its average income.
A researcher decided to compare mean levels of depression in married and unmarried women. He collected a random sample of 45 married women and 55 unmarried women, and computed depression scores for each woman based on responses to a questionnaire.
A researcher wishes to compare mean rates of marijuana use in her sample to national rates, where the mean and standard deviation of marijuana use are available from a Statistics Canada database.
Explanation / Answer
Part A:- A researcher collected data on the incomes of recent B.A. graduates from Carleton, and wishes to compare these to incomes of all Ontario B.A. grads. However, the only information the researcher has about this population is its average income.
Ans:- The researcher has the sample data of Carleton and the polulation mean of Ontario. Hence we need to conduct a One sample t-Test to compare the incomes of B.A graduate of Carletonn ad Ontario.
Part 2:- A researcher decided to compare mean levels of depression in married and unmarried women. He collected a random sample of 45 married women and 55 unmarried women, and computed depression scores for each woman based on responses to a questionnaire.
Ans : We need to conduct a 2 independent sample T- Test to compute depression scores for each woman based on responses to a questionnaire.
Part 3 :- A researcher wishes to compare mean rates of marijuana use in her sample to national rates, where the mean and standard deviation of marijuana use are available from a Statistics Canada database.
Ans:- Since the sample is taken from the pupulation which has its statiscs at canada database, We need to conduct a one sample z-test to campare the mean of sample to the mean of population.
Thank you.
