Question

A study was conducted to compare the resting pulse rate among smokers and non-smokers. The data are summarized in the table below. The pulse rate distribution in each group can be assumed to be normal, and equal population variances can be assumed in the two groups. Conduct the appropriate test to see if the mean resting pulse rate for smokers is higher than that for non-smolers. Show all work and include all steps (hypotheses, rejection region, p-value, decision and conclusion) for full credit.

Explanation / Answer

Null Hypothesis: Mu(Smokers) < Mu(Non-smokers)
Alternate Hypothesis:   Mu(Smokers) >= Mu(Non-smokers)

SE = sqrt( (s1^2/n1) + (s2^2/n2) )
= sqrt ((4^2/35) + (3.2^2 / 40))
= 0.844

z = (Mu1 - Mu2) / SE
= (76.4 - 73.7) / 0.844
= 3.199

P-value = 1 -0.9993 = 0.0007

Since P-value < 0.05

Decision : We reject Null Hypothesis.

Conclusion : Sufficient evidence to say mean resting pulse of smokers is higher than non smokers.
