Question

Z tests are often used when a researcher wants to compare his or her sample to known population norms. The Graded Naming Test (GNT) asks respondents to name objects in a set of 30 black-and- white drawings. The test, often used to detect brain damage, starts with easy words like kangaroo and gets more difficult, ending with words like sextant. The GNT population average score for adults in England is 20.4 with a standard deviation of 3.2. A researcher wondered if Canadian adults had a significantly different average score from adults in England. The mean for a sample of 30 Canadian adults was 17.5.

a. State the null hypothesis (Ho) and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) for this study.

b. Calculate the z statistic.

Explanation / Answer

a)the null nhypothesis = Ho = u=20.4

the alternate hypothesis = Ha = u<20.4

B) the static value = (x-mean)/(standard deviation/sqrt(n))

= (17.5- 20.4)/(3.2/sqrt(30)) = -4.96

therefore the z static = -4.96
