Question

A study involved 251 patients aged 39 to 70 with type 2 diabetes. The patients, none of whom were regular exercisers, were randomized into one of four groups: aerobic exercise, resistance training, a combination of both, or none. After 22 weeks researchers saw improvement in blood sugar control in all patients who worked out. Compared with controls, patients in the aerobic group has an A1C hemoglobin values (a measure of blood sugar control) of 0.51%. The resistance training group had a 0.38% reduction compared to the controls. The combination group had a 1% reduction compared to the controls. Identify the explanatory variable in this study.

Explanation / Answer

Here it is given that all the patients have type 2 diabetes and also they are not regular exercisers. Now researchers want know the effect of different exercise on these patients, So, they randomized patients in four groups : aerobic exercise, resistance training, a combination of both and none. Here, out these four group three are treatment group and patient with no exercise are taken as control group.

The four treatment groups can be treated as the explanatory variables as researchers want to know the effect of the exercise on the control of diabetes.

So, our response variable would be control in blood sugar in patients under study.

And explanatory variables are aerobic exercise, resistance training, a combation of both and the fourth group which contain patient who have not given specific exercise will be treated as control variable.
