Question

Pancake mix Milling Science Club receives an order from Mrs. Powel's Bakery to prepare a batch of pancake mix with an exact composition of 16.3% protein, 4.5% lipids, and 68.8% carbohydrates. The basic pancake mix is composed of three ingredients: Dried eggs, milk powder and soft wheat flour. Composition of each ingredient is given below: Dried eggs: 45% protein, 39% lipids, 10.7% carbohydrates Milk powder Flour Club officers notice that they have only 10 kg of dried eggs and plenty of milk powder and flour. Determine the amounts of milk powder and flour that must be mixed with 10 kg of dried eggs to produce a pancake mix with desired composition. 28% protein, 11% lipids, 51% carbohydrates : 11% protein, 78% carbohydrates

Explanation / Answer

We need 16.3% of protein , 4.5 % lipids and 68.8% carbohydrates in the pancake mix.

Let we take x kg of milk powder and y kg of flour and 10 kg dried eggs.

Amount of protein = 0.28x + 0.11y+ 4.5

Amount of lipids = 0.11x +3.9

Amount of carbohydrates = 0.51x + 0.78y + 1.07

Eqn will become 0.28x + 0.11y + 4.5 = 0.163 (x+y+10).................(1)

And 0.11x + 3.9 = 0.045 (x+y+10).................(2)

Eqn will become as follows

=> 0.117x - 0.053y + 2.87=0.............(3)

and => 0.65x - 0.045y - 3.45 = 0................(4)

On solving these eqn, we get

x= 10.6905

and y = 35.2204

Therefore we need 10.69 kg of milk powder and 35.22 Kg of flour
