Question
A regular soda has about 180 calories which is equivalent to 45 grams of sugar (about 11 teaspoons!!). If you sit and watch TV then it takes about 3 hours to burn 180 calories, but if you run at 4 miles per hour then it takes about half an hour to burn the 180 calories. Running increases the burn rate by the same amount from regular walk while sitting down and watching TV decreases the burn rate by the same amount from regular walk. What is your burn rate when you are walking around and how much does it increase when you run?
Note: Assume that x is the walking burn rate and y is the increase burn rate when running.
Write the equation that involves x and y, and running burn rate, 12 hours to burn 180calories:
Explanation / Answer
x is the walking burn rate and y is the increase burn rate when running
Burn rate in case of Sit and watching TV (x) = 180 calories per 3 hours = 180/3 cal per hour = 60 cal per hour
Burn rate in running (y) = 180 calories per 0.5 hours = 180/0.5 cal per hour = 360 cal per hour
let the increase in burn rate in case of running from walking is d
so burn rate in case of walking = x + d = y - d
60 + d = 360 - d
2d = 300
d = 150
so burn rate of walking = 360 - 150 = 210 calories per hour
and increase in burn rate is 150 calorie per hour.
