Question

Momo Chemical Ltd. produces three types of analytical grade solvent on a weekly basis - acetone, ethanol and isopropanol. The production of these solvents requires a specific amount of raw chemical and laboratory processing time. The details of these requirements are summarized in the following table, along with the profit that can be generated from the sales of these solvents. The laboratory is only open for 48 hours (hr) in a week and every week, the company purchases only 415 litres (L) of raw chemicals for processing. The processed solvents must be stored in a super-dry environment and the company can only afford to store 215 bottles of 250 millilitres (mL) solvents. (a) Set up the system of equations to model the production run. (b) Using the Gauss-Seidel method, calculate the numbers of bottles of different solvents that that can be produced per week. Use a relaxation factor, lambda = 0.9, and do TWO iterations. Use the initial values of Acetone_0 = 100, Ethanol_0 = 75, Isopropanol_0 = 50. What would be the weekly profit if all the solvents produced were sold at the end of the week?

Explanation / Answer

let A , E , I be number of bottles produced

1.5* A    + 3*E +   I        < 415

0.15 *A +0.2* E + 0.45* I < 48

A      +E        +         I < 215
