Question
You arc an engineer at a company planning the design and manufacture of a digital answering machine. Given a sampling rate of 12KHz and a quantization of 8 bits, how much memory (MBytes) is required to store 20 minutes of conversation? What size memory chip (in MBytes) is appropriate? (Recall that memory chip sizes are available in powers of 2. For example, 2KB, 4KB, 8KB, ....2MB, 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, etc.) Must show all steps of the calculation. If your manager says the overall total cost for the memory chips is too high, what would you recommend to reduce costs (or needed capacity) of memory chips? What questions would you ask? (Include 3 suggestions)Explanation / Answer
Fs=12KHz N=8 bits T= 20min=20*60=1200 s
Now total information = Fs*N=12*1000*8=96,000 bits/sec
now Total no of bits required to store 20min data is =96000*1200=1152*105 bits
in Bytes 115200*103/8= 14400 *103 Bytes = 14400 *1000/1024 =14062.5 KB
in MB 14062.5 KB/ 1024 = 13.73 MB (megabyte )
so approximatly 16 MB memory required
b)
now more the size more the cost
following things can be done to reduced the cost
a) making chip slower by reducing the sampling rate
b) By reducing the number of bits in quantization
