Question
omse Sxtra Credit Oroblem 2 3 points. Due September 25 You are in a control room on the first floor in a building. There are three switches in the room for three different reading lights on a desk in a room in the basement. However, you don't know which switch is for which light. You may turn on some, or all, the switches and run to the basement and observe which of the lights are on. Can you identify which switch is for which light by making just one trip to the basement? Hint: The problem is easy if you just had two switches for two lights: all you need is to switch on one of the switches and see which light is on. But for three switches for three lights, you need some other property rather then just the light to distinguish which is which.)Explanation / Answer
Note: Property of bulb which we are using to identify is, whenever we ON a bulb it gets hot after sometime.
Assume three switches are S1, S2, and S3. Just turn on any two swithces together, lets say, S1 and S3. After some time switch off one of them, lets say, S3. Now, go to the basement, so, whichever light is ON is associated with S1, and whichever light is HOT and OFF is associated with S3, finally, remaining bulb is associated with S2.
