Question

Functions are used by programmers to access databases All databases involving time have a "reference time" --a point in time for which the value of the time variable quals 0. Suppose a function named g accesses the population of Loveland, CO, with a reference time of 12:00am, January 1, 1990. Thus g(u) represents Loveland's population u years from 12:00am, January 1, 1990 a. Represent Loveland's population on 1/1/1982 # Preview b. Represent the change in Loveland's population from 1/1/1994 to 1/1/1997 Preview c. The expression g(8) g e, the 13) represents the population of Loveland change in from 1/1/1977 to 1/1/1998 from 1/1/1990 to 1/1/1998 Oon 1/1/1998 from 1/1/1977 to 1/1/1990 Oon 1/1/1977 d. Renresent the nonulation of Loveland h vears after

Explanation / Answer

a. loveland's population on 1/1/1982 = g(-8) ,since numbers of years from 1/1/1990 to 1/1/1982 = u = -8

b. change in loveland's population (from 1/1/1194 to 1/1/1997) = g(7) - g(4)
since loveland's population on 1/1/1994 = g(4) and loveland's population on 1/1/1997 = g(7)

c. since g(8)= loveland's population on 1/1/1998 and g(-13)= loveland's population on 1/1/1977
therefore, g(8) - g(-13) = change in population from 1/1/1997 to 1/1/1998

d. since now, u=h+3, therefore, populatin of loveland h years from 1993 = g(h+3)

e. since, loveland's population on 1/1/1993 = g(3), and populatin of loveland h years from 1993 = g(h+3)
therefore, required expression = g(h+3) - g(3) = g(3+h) - g(3)

f. since,  populatin of loveland c years from 1990 = g(c) and  populatin of loveland after 2 years from c = g(c+2)
therefore, change in populaion over 2 years period beggining c years from 1/1/1990= g(c+2) - g(c)
