Question

Homework Set 6 11. Rhonda and Jordan were talking about coins. Rhonda told Jordan that she had 12 coins in her purse worth 65 cents and that none of the coins were half-dollars (a.k.a. 50-cent pieces). Rhonda asked Jordan to figure out what the coins were. Jordan said she needed more information because there was more than one possibility. So Rhonda told Jordan how many of the coins were dimes. That gave Jordan enough information to figure out what the coins were. How many nickels does Rhonda have?

Explanation / Answer

There are two possibility with the conditions

1) Total amount must be 65 cents

2) Total number of coins must be 12

3) None of the coins were half dollar

Possibility 1: 5 dimes, 2 nickel and 5 cents

5 dimes, 2 nickel and 5 cents = 5 * 10 + 2 * 5 + 5 * 1 = 65 cents

Possibility 2: 1 dime and 11 nickel

1 dime and 11 nickel = 1 * 10 + 5 * 11 = 65 cents

Now Rhonda told Jordan about the number of dimes in the purse, which can be only 5 or 1

So if rhonda told 5 dimes, then the number of nickel will be 2

So if rhonda toll 1 dime, then the number of nickel will be 11
