Question: By how much is the total variation in crime rate (y) reduced when percentage of high school graduates(x) is introduced into the analysis? Is this a relatively large or small reduction.
Ive already done all the calculation for this dataset using sas, the output is above.
I am just not sure what the question is asking. Is it asking dfor total variation: which i think is explained variation + unexplained. But i dont know the formuals
The REG Procedure Model: MODEL1 Dependent Variable: CR Number of Observations Read 84 Number of Observations Used 84 Analysis of Variance Sum of Mean DF Squares Squae F Value Pr> F Source Model 1 93462942 9346294216.83 Variable DF Estimate Intercept HSDIP 20518 3277.64269 6.26Explanation / Answer
Explanation:
1) The bete coefficient significant different from zero. Therefore the model was good fit
2) R2 = 0.1703 = 17.03% OF VARIATION IN THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE (Y)WAS EXAPLAINED BY THE ONLY ONE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (X). IT WAS SMALL REDUCTION.
3)R2= COEFFICIENT OF DETERMINATION = (EXPLAINED VARIANCE/TOTAL VARIANCE)
(OR) R2= 1-(RESIDUAL SUM OF SQUARES/TOTAL VARIANCE)
(OR) R2=1-FRACTION OF UNEXPLAINED VARIANCE
