Question

Round all answers to at least 3 decimal places and assume, unless otherwise noted, that =0.05 1. A researcher wanted to investigate the effects of a high glucose diet on the weight of Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). He randomly selected 100 adult hamsters to receive either (a) intravenous glucose (10 mg/min) or (b) intravenous saline for 30 minutes each day for 4 weeks. At the end of the 4 week period, he measured the weight (in ounces) of each hamster. Which test would you use to compare the groups? (1 pt) 2. Suppose in Question #1, the researcher only recorded whether or not each hamster showed an increase in its weight, instead of its actual weight, which test would you use? (1 pt)

Explanation / Answer

He randomly selected 100 adult hamsters to receive either (a) intravenous glucose (10 mg/min) or (b) intravenous saline for 30 minutes each day for 4 weeks. At the end of the 4 week period, he measured the weight (in ounces) of each hamster.

Here effect of intravenous glucose is independent of effect of intravenous saline.

Hence to compare the groups we use z test for independence.

2. The researcher only recorded whether or not each hamster showed an increase in its weight, instead of its actual weight.

Here we use sign test.
