Question
In a 2011 National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism survey, 33% of American adults said that they had never consumed alcohol. Suppose that this result is true for the 2011 population of American adults, In a recent random sample of 2200 adult Americans, 36% said that they had never consumed alcohol. Find the P-value to test the hypothesis that the current percentage of American adults who have never consumed alcohol is different from 33%. What is your conclusion if the significance level is 5%?Explanation / Answer
Perform 1-proportion Z test (large sample) to find the p value in order to test the claim.
Z=(Ps-Pu)/sqrt [Pu(1-Pu)/N], where, Ps and Pu refer to sample and population proportion, N is sample size.
=(0.36-0.33)/sqrt [0.33(1-0.33)/2200]
=2.99
The p value is 0.00279 (two-tailed).
The p value is less than alpha=0.05. Therefore, reject null hypothesis to conclude that current percenatge of Americans who have never consumed alcohol is different from 33%.
