Question
In a survey conducted by CareerBuilder.com, employers were asked if they had ever sent an employee home because the were dressed inappropriately. A total of 2765 employers responded to the survey, with 968 saying that they had sent an employee home for inappropriate attire. In a press release, CareerBuilder makes the claim that more than one-third of employers have sent an employee home to change clothes. Do the sample data provide convincing evidence in support of these claim? Test the relevant hypothesis using ? = .05. For purposes of this exercise, assume that it is reasonable to regard the sample exercise, assume that it is reasonable to regard the sample as representative of employers in the United States.
Explanation / Answer
Formulating the null and alternatuve hypotheses,
Ho: p <= 0.333333333
Ha: p > 0.333333333
As we see, the hypothesized po = 0.333333333
Getting the point estimate of p, p^,
p^ = x / n = 0.350090416
Getting the standard error of p^, sp,
sp = sqrt[po (1 - po)/n] = 0.008964915
Getting the z statistic,
z = (p^ - po)/sp = 1.869184774
As this is a 1 tailed test, then, getting the p value,
p = 0.030798556
As P < 0.05, we REJECT THE NULL HYPOTHESIS.
Hence, there is significant that more than one-third of employers have sent an employee home to change clothes at 0.05 level. [CONCLUSION]
