Question
One of the most important skills students should develop from the their statistics and research methods courses is the ability to make statistical decisions. Knowing which test to conduct based on the study criteria is a core concept in this course. As such, you will find sample study descriptions below. For each choose from the following: z-test, one-way sample t-test, dependent (paired t-test), independent t-test, or one-way ANOVA. After choosing the appropriate test explain why you chose that test.
1)The Philadelphia Inquirer conducts a study to determine if Flyers or Eagles fans are louder at home games. They measure the decibel level (loudness) at home games throughout the season for each team. They compare the average decibel level between the two teams.
2)Andrew and David are interested in whether students prefer Macs or PCs on campus. They have students work on a Macs and PCs to answer and access their email and to type a short word document. After having students work on each they measure the mood of each student (1 very negative to 10 very positive). They compare the average mood of students between the two types of computers.
3)Dr. Jackson recruits older adults who are either considered high functioning or low functioning based on an assessment for their doctor. She then gives them a memory test to determine if those who are high versus low functioning differ in their memory performance.
4)Jasson and Amy are working on their advanced research methods project. For their study they want to understand whether where a student lives impacts the number of times they are late to class. They divide students into five groups those that live within 5 miles, 10 miles, 15 miles, 20 miles, or 25 miles and ask them to record the number of times they are late over the course of two weeks. They compare the average lateness for the five groups.
Explanation / Answer
1. As the Flyer Fans and Eagle fans are two different sample and thy are completely independent to each other. So to compare the average decibel level of the two teams we need to conduct independent t-test.
2. Here each student is assgning to work on both mac and PCs, so the sample of mood of students after using Mac and PCs are correlated, because the data for Mac and PCs has been collected from a single group of students. So it will be a paired t-test.
3. Here also an older adults will either be low functioning or high functioning, so the two sample are not anyway correlated. So it will be again an independent t-test.
4.Here the students are divided into 5 categories depending on the distance of their houses from the school and we are considering to test the equality of mean number of times they are late over 5 categories. So as the number of categories is greater than 2 and each category is independent so it will be one-way anova test.
