Question

The United States Department of Energy is conducting an experiment to compare the heat gain in houses using two different types of windows, A and B. Six windows of each type are available for the experiment. The Department has constructed a house with twelve windows as shown on the floor plan below North Window Door Box 12 Door Window Box 1 Window Box 2 Box 11 Window Box 10 Box 3 Interior of House West East Window Box 9 Box 4 Window Box 8 Box 5 Window Window Box 6 Box 7 , Door South In the interior of the house, each window is surrounded by a window box to capture and measure the amount of heat coming in through that window and to isolate the heat gain for each window.

Explanation / Answer

(a) We would want to block by direction the window faces since different direction get different amount of sunlight which affect the amount of heat coming throw the window.

Block 1 = 1, 12 (North) , Block 2 = 2, 3(North East), Block 3 = 4, 5(South East)

Block 4 = 6, 7(South) Block 5 = 8, 9(South West), Block 6 = 10, 11(North West)

(b) For each box, put the window box numbers in a hat. We need to randomly assign half of the windows to A and half to B. Use a random number generator where there are two outcomes.
