Question

I have an excel spreadsheet and I need help on inputing a formula. I have a to of 45 cells:

E6:E50, within cells E6:E50 I have different texts, e.g., Med, OB /GYN, Orth, Sur. In cells G6:G50 there number values that correlate to the different texts in cells E6:E50. My question being what excel formula can I used to be able to add the different values found in cells G6:G50.

OB/GYN is found 6 times within cells E6:E50. the corresponding numbers are 2,3,4,3,3,5 found within cells G6:G50. What formulae can add the totals for numbers within G6:G50 if they match a text in cells E6:E50.

Explanation / Answer

The feature you want to use is Pivot Tables. It's really easy to do exactly what you want with just a few clicks once you learn how to use that feature.

Select the E (say named "type") and G(say named "value") column and copy them to a new sheet therefore, in the new sheet E (i.e. "type") will become column A and G (i.e. "value") will become column B.

Go to Insert option in the Menu Bar beside Home option and Click Pivot.

It will ask you to select the area of the data so select the two columns and click OK.

New sheet will get open and in the Menu options of Pivot it will show the column names "type" and "value".

Drag "type" to the Row section (below) and drag sum of "value" to the Column section (below).

Result : 1st column will be unique types in "type" column (i.e. initially column E) and 2nd column will be the sum of all the values (present in column "values" i.e. initially column G) corresponding to the specific types
