Question

In each of the following situations, explain what is wrong and why. A researcher wants to test H_0: x_1 = x_2 versus the two-sided alternative H_a: x_1 notequalto x_2. A study recorded the credit card IQ scores of 100 college freshmen. The scores of the 48 males in the study were compared with the scores of all 100 freshmen using the two-sample methods of this section. A two-sample t statistic gave a P-value of 0.97. From this, we can reject the null hypothesis with 95% confidence. A researcher is interested in testing the one-sided alternative H_a: mu_1

Explanation / Answer

a. Researcher is trying to cunduct a hypothesis test for difference between sample means instead of population means. This is wrong because we already have the sample mean and hypothesis tests are conducted for populatin means

b. For sample the IQ of 48 males is taken instead of freshmen. The sample has to be of the same category as the population.

c. we cannot reject null hypothesis because p-value is greater than 5%which is the level of significance

d. for p-value of two sided P(x>2.41)is calculated and multiplied by 2 but we need P(x<2.41)
